"AlekseiGhermanjunior’sfilmTheLastTrainpremieredinMoscowinmidDecemberduringthefilmfestivalStalker,whichalsoawardedittheprizeforthebestfilm.However,itsfirstscrninghadalreadytakenplaceinthe‘controcorrente’competitionoftheVeniceFilmFestivalinSeptember.Thefilm,dealingwiththemeofwarandshotinblackandwhite,remainedunnoticedbythepressinthecontextoftheVeniceFilmFestival(preoupiedalmostexclusivelywithZviagintsev’sTheReturn),althoughitwasawardedaprize.InMoscow,itmaderatheradifferentimpression,especiallywhensetinthecontextoffilmsdealingwithhumanrightsissues.Gherman’sfilmis,inasense,aresponsetohisfather’swarfilm20DayswithoutWar.Maybethisexplainstheoityofayoung,clearlytalenteirectorventuringonhisdebutfilmintothetroenterritoriesofthewarfilm,athemethatdominatedRussiancinemaingeneral,buthadalsobndealtwithbyhisfather.ForGhermanJunior,however,warknowsneitherwinnersnorlosers:insteadofexploringthehistoryofWWII,Ghermanlooksatthefateoftwomenwhohavefailedtomaketherightchoice(orachoice)attherighttime.Therefore,theyarenowthevictimsofcircumstances,ofpolitics,ofregimes–whichtheyhaveorhavenotelected.Gherman’sconcerniswithpeopleinparticularcircumstances,whicharenottheirchoice,andhowtheycopewiththeseunwantedsituations.
